A teenager has been arrested after a man died when his throat was slashed outside the Church of Scientology's Australian headquarters.

The 16-year-old allegedly brought a 25cm kitchen knife with him when he went to see his mother at the complex in Chatswood, Sydney's north shore, on Thursday afternoon.

One man died and another was injured after the teenager was asked to leave the premises following a fight between the boy and his mother earlier in the day.

'He's had a spin-out and they have tried to move him away to safety,' a member of the church, who did not wish to be named, told The Daily Telegraph

Police are seen outside the Church of Scientology's Australasian headquarters at Chatswood, on Sydney's north shore, on Thursday afternoon

Emergency services were called to the sprawling complex about 12.30pm on Thursday following reports of a stabbing

A 24-year-old man, who police believe is of Taiwanese descent, had his throat slashed.

He was rushed to Royal North Shore Hospital just after 12.30pm in a critical condition, but later died.

A second man, who suffered cuts to his arms and hands, remains in the same hospital in a stable condition.

Both men were employees at the Australasian headquarters.

The 16-year-old boy was arrested at the scene and taken to the police station for questioning.

The teenagers' mother is believed to be a member of the controversial church.

'At this stage... it would appear the altercation or the reason the young person has been removed from the premises is... related to a domestic incident that occurred yesterday,' North Shore Police Area Command Detective Chief Inspector Simon Jones said.

In a statement, the Church of Scientology said: 'This very unfortunate matter is in the hands of the police. We cannot make any further comment beyond the fact that the victim was a beloved member of our Church.

'The Church is providing the police with any assistance needed in their investigation.'

The sprawling Chatswood complex is described by the Church of Scientology as its 'biggest spiritual centre outside the United States'.

The site - which borders the Lane Cove national park - was snapped-up for about $37 million by the secretive group, who outlaid another $20 million in renovations and construction.

The Church of Scientology opened its Australasian headquarters - built on the bones of the former National Acoustics Laboratory - in September 2016.

Facilities include 60 'auditing' or spiritual counselling rooms - where technology called 'e-meters' are used, a chapel, grand auditorium, production studio and an office devoted to L. Ron Hubbard.
