A father who watched his daughter die in the street when she was stabbed 48 times after getting off her school bus is begging for her crazed killer to remain locked up as he makes a bid to be let out on parole.

Tania Burgess was on her way home from school through Forresters Beach Resort car park on the New South Wales central coast in July 19, 2005 when she was ambushed by a 16-year-old boy armed with a knife, ABC reported.

The 15-year-old was brutally stabbed 48 times by the teenager - most of the cuts were small and shallow.

The stab wound that eventually killed Tania was a deep piercing in her heart.

She lay there barely breathing as rescuers attempted to help her when she was able to tell them the name of her killer.

Known as 'DL' for legal reasons, he was put on trial for Tania's murder in 2008 and it took the jury 90 minutes to deliver a guilty verdict.

The court heard the teenager was jealous that Tania had rejected him and it's what caused him to stab her.

He was originally sentenced to 17 years' jail but the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal reduced it to 13 years.

DL was examined by three psychiatrists and they concluded he was suffering from anxiety, psychosis  or early stages of schizophrenia at the time of the murder.

Now aged 29, the killer has put in a request to be let out on parole.

Tania's parents, Mandy and Chris Burgess are heartbroken and outraged that their daughter's killer could be released.

Because DL was taken into custody on the day of the murder and because of his reduced sentencing, he became eligible for parole on July 19, 2018, The Herald reported.

His jail sentence will expire in July 18, 2023, and is now applying for parole for the remainder of his sentence.

The Burgess's are begging that DL remain locked up for his horrific actions which led to the death of their daughter.

Justice John Basten told the court that will consider the impact of Tania's death to her parents, siblings and extended family.

'...important to bear in mind that an offender will not necessarily be released on parole at the expiration of his non-parole period.

'The suffering of the parents, particularly, must have been amplified by the lack of explanation from the offender and the psychiatrists' inability to reach definitive conclusions.'

Justice Basten said the decision is a matter for the NSW Parole Authority.
