Mercedes-Benz GLB Tipped To Debut This Summer, AMG 35 Variant Will Follow

Mercedes-Benz is reportedly going to reveal the GLB this summer, before starting taking orders in selected markets by the end of the year, Auto Express reports.

Essentially a roomier alternative to the second-gen GLA, the GLB will feature a boxier bodywork, as revealed in previous spy shots. This will free up some necessary space inside, resulting in better rear headroom and legroom, as well as an improved luggage capacity.

Despite some saying that it’s a miniaturized G-Class, the new GLB will adopt some of the styling features of the larger GLE instead. And at a first glance, at least, it looks somewhat similar to the discontinued GLK, which was replaced by the GLC back in 2015.

Underpinned by the same platform as the new A-Class and other compact vehicles, the upcoming GLB will be offered with Mercedes‘ 4Matic all-wheel drive. However, it’s unknown yet whether base models will arrive with FWD.

In the engine department, clients should expect the same units found in its hatchback sibling. European customers will get an assortment of petrol and diesel mills. And if its makes its way to North America, then the GLB will likely benefit from the same lump as the A-Class Sedan, namely a 2.0-liter turbo-four, with 188 hp (191 PS / 140 kW) and 221 lb-ft (300 Nm) of torque.

Mercedes-AMG will launch the 35 derivative as well, powered by the 2.0-liter four-pot of the AMG A35. The unit is good for 301 hp (306 PS / 225 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque, and works with a 7-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive.

There’s no word on a full-blown AMG GLB 45, although we wouldn’t be surprised if this will be reserved for the sportier-looking GLA.
