Rajkot edges out Vadodara as final choice for AIIMS

GANDHINAGAR: After a delay stretching across years and political confusion over whether Vadodara or Rajkot will be approved for the proposed prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Gujarat, the Centre has finalized Rajkot as the site for the proposed AIIMS hospital. BJP and Congress leaders from both the regions, Vadodara and Rajkot had lobbied intensely to bring the AIIMS to their home towns. However the Union government finalized Rajkot following the recommendations of a high-level committee.

Nitin Patel, deputy chief minister and the health minister announced, “The Union goverment has decided to establish the first AIIMS hospital in Gujarat at Rajkot from the two proposed locations (Vadodara and Rajkot). Government of India will develop a 800-1,000 bed state-ofthe-art hospital at the cost of Rs 1,200 crore. The son of the soil, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given this gift to the people of Gujarat. We are thankful to him.”

Patel added, “The state government has allocated 120 acres of land close to the Rajkot city for the medical college-cum-hospital run by the AIIMS. It will not only provide state-of-the-art medical facilities to the people of the region, but will also promote research activity in state. The AIIMS will play a key role in providing super-speciality facilities as well as contribute in controlling epidemics.’’ Speaking about the process of selection, Patel said, “The Union government had established a committee which after scrutinising various aspects like geographical conditions, population type, local available facilities etc., finally suggested Rajkot. On the recommendations of the committee, the government of India finalized Rajkot as the location for the first AIIMS in Gujarat.”

People of not only Saurashtra but the whole state will benefit from the decision, said Patel, adding that work on the new AIIMS is expected to start soon and “likely to be completed in next three to four years.’’ Chief minister Vijay Rupani also thanked PM Narendra Modi for providing an AIIMS for the state.

Hope it will not be jumla: Congress

Gujarat Congress leaders welcomed the Centre’s decision of setting up an AIIMS at Rajkot. They were quick to comment that they hope this will not be a mere election-oriented announcement. Manish Doshi, Congress spokesperson said,“PM Modi, who claims himself as a son of Gujarat should have allocated the AIIMS as soon as he became the PM. It’s too late for the state, because it could have been ready by now. We welcome the decision but hope that it’s not another election jumla (false promise) as Lok Sabha elections are at hand and BJP has sensed defeat.’’
