Mumbai: In a housebreaking incident in Dadar (W) on Wednesday, thieves broke into a jewellery store and stole 1.5-kilogram gold worth close to Rs 4.93 crore. Shivaji Park Police have registered a case of housebreaking against unknown persons and are investigating the matter.
According to police sources, the incident came to light on Wednesday morning, when the owner of a pottery shop next to Anil Jewellers on Ranade Road in Dadar (W) noticed a hole on the tin roof of the jewellery store. The store-owner immediately alerted the jeweller, who was returning to the city from Rajasthan. The jeweller then alerted Shivaji Park Police, who have booked unidentified persons under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) pertaining to housebreaking and robbery.
Suryakant Gaikwad, senior police inspector of Shivaji Park police station said, “We are probing the matter and are trying to acquire the CCTV footage from neighbouring shops to get a glimpse of the accused.” The accused had drilled a hole in the roof of the store and decamped with 1.5 kg gold worth Rs 4.93 crore from the jeweller’s locker. Since the shop was closed for a while, the accused jumped at the chance. While sources said the shop had been broken into from another shop, police claimed otherwise.
