HYDERABAD: The Telangana high court commenced its journey on Wednesday, albeit with a backlog of over half the pending cases that were filed in the common high court of the two Telugu speaking states.
The Telangana HC opened its doors with an opening balance of 1.87 lakh pending cases out of the total backlog of 3.4 lakh cases in the combined HC. Declaring this, Telangana HC’s first Chief Justice T B Radhakrishnan, however, urged members of the judiciary and advocates to work towards ensuring timely delivery of justice.
“It is absolutely necessary to maintain the requisite momentum, discipline and equilibrium to ensure that the court delivers, with the available judge strength, qualitative and timely justice,” Radhakrishnan told the first full court meet of the new HC.
Addressing both the Bar and the Bench simultaneously at the meet, which was held in the first court hall, the CJ said: “Let us work not merely as two sides of a coin, but as two wheels of a strong caravan of justice which will move forward with requisite speed, but with due care and caution.”
Acknowledging that they too were surprised with the fast-paced developments that resulted in the formation of the new Telangana HC on new year day, the CJ thanked all the judges, officials and staff of the judiciary for their efforts in ensuring smooth transition from a common high court to the Telangana HC and that regular sittings commenced from Wednesday.
“Let us all work hand-inhand in strict conformity with the decorum of the institution and serve the people from this highest seat of justice delivery in the state of Telangana,” the CJ said.
Telangana advocate general B S Prasad, in his speech, recalled the turbulent days that preceded the formation of Telangana and said that people were the masters and their aspirations and interests formed the fulcrum of a healthy democracy.
Telangana High Court Advocates Association president C Damodar Reddy urged the court to fill up of vacancies of judges on an urgent basis to achieve the goal of speedy justice. In his address, Telangana Bar Council chairman A Narasimha Reddy assured the court that the advocates in Telangana would strive towards ensuring social justice and the establishment of an ideal judicial system in the country.
