KOLKATA: A woman was arrested for allegedly exchanging spuriously hallmarked ornaments with original gold jewellery at a major jewellery chain’s Salt Lake branch on Tuesday.
Police said, Shukla Paul, a resident of Duttabad, had first come to the Salt Lake HA block shop on November 4 and exchanged over 40 grams of hallmarked gold bangles with a new gold chain worth Rs 1.33 lakh. However, during scrutiny, it was found that the ornaments were spuriously hallmarked and the manager of the store lodged a complaint of cheating against her.
On Tuesday, the woman again came to the shop trying to work the same ploy, but this time, the staff identified the woman and handed her over to the police.
“We believe the woman is part of a racket engaged in fake hallmarking of impure gold ornaments. We have taken her in custody and will question her further to get more details,” said a senior officer of Bidhannagar south police station.
