PUNE: The Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad police registered 992 cases of drunk driving on New Year’s eve. While the Pune police recorded 873 cases, the Pimpri-Chinchwad police recorded 119 cases on the eve between 9 pm and 5 am.

With 26 spots of nakabandi in the city, over 6,000 police personnel were deployed on the streets after 9 pm. The city traffic police also said that 252 people died in fatal accidents in 2018 while the number stood at 261 in 2017. 14,972 cases against traffic offenders were reported in 2018. 184 two-wheeler riders died and none were wearing helmets.

Speaking about the drive, Deputy Commissioner of Police Tejaswi Satpute said that the drive against drink and drive cases a week before the new year helped in spreading the message to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol. “Fortunately, this year, there were no fatal accidents on New Year’s eve. Last year, three people had died in accidents on New Year’s eve,” she added. Officials of the Traffic Department said that as police were deployed at all hotspots and due to planned deployment, they were able to nab offenders. “People caught with higher than the permissible limit of alcohol have been booked and will be made to appear in the court for punitive action. We believe such actions would deter people from driving under influence,” said an official.

HELMET RULE
Over 3,000 people were penalised on Tuesday for not wearing helmets. Last week, 5,000 persons were penalised on a daily basis for not wearing their helmets.
