YAD members get bail in defacement case
Shariq Majeed | TNN | Jan 2, 2019, 12:05 ISTLUDHIANA: Almost a week after a statue of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was vandalized, a court here granted bail to Youth Akali Dal (YAD) leaders Gurdeep Singh Gosha and Meetpal Dugri on Tuesday.
The duo, who had allegedly defaced the statue with black spray and applied red paint on its hands while accusing the former PM of involvement in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, was arrested on December 25. They were booked under section 3 of Punjab Property Defacement Act 1997, section 68 Information Technology Act and non-bailable section 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on basis of religion) of IPC at Salem Tabri police station.
Earlier, the public prosecutor had argued that through the alleged act the accused had hurt the feelings of those who loved the former PM. He argued that t was a serious crime related to 1984 anti-Sikh riots, so the accused should not be granted bail. On the other hand counsel for the accused argued that Section 153-A has been wrongly imposed in this case as defacing a statue was not promoting enmity on religious lines.
