CHENNAI: A 44-year-old rowdy, who got trapped inside a well in Ambattur while escaping from police, was rescued after two days with the help of the police and fire and rescue services personnel on Monday. John Jaisingh, a resident of Washermenpet, was treated at the government hospital before he was sent to the Puzhal prison on Monday night.
The Ambattur crime wing police arrested Jaisingh for theft at the house of Vijayakumar of Indian Bank Colony in Ambattur and launched a hunt for his associates. Initial inquiries revealed that Jaisingh who was involved in more than 22 cases including three murder cases in the city, came out of prison recently.
During his stay in jail he came in contact with many inmates who were detained for burglary. Once out of jail, Jaisingh went to Ambattur and targeted locked houses early on Sunday. He and his associates Suresh of Chetpet and Kamal of Tiruvannamalai entered into a house and stole Rs 10,000. While escaping when they jumped off the compound wall of the house some residents saw them and raised an alarm. Hearing the cries, a team from the Ambattur police station patrolling nearby rushed to the place.
Seeing police, the trio got panicked and ran in different directions. Two cops went after Jaisingh. To avoid being caught, Jaisingh jumped into a well at Chandrasekarapuram Third Street in Ambattur. The two cops failed to locate him and quit chasing.
Jaisingh remained inside the well as he could not climb the wall. He remained there the whole Sunday but the next day he got nervous as he was hungry and sleepy. On Monday, when he heard some noises close to the well he screamed for help.
He told a group of curious residents that he slipped into the well and requested them not to inform police as he was from a decent family. Suspicious, the residents informed police who, along with fire and rescue services personnel, rescued Jaisingh.
