Parched South Delhi may get relief

NEW DELHI: A large number of south Delhi colonies between Aurobindo Marg and August Kranti Marg can look forward to a significant improvement in water supply in the New Year. DJB has finally approved the separation of command areas of three underground reservoirs (UGRs)—Greater Kailash, Deer Park and Malviya Nagar—and a detailed hydraulic modelling of the entire Deer Park UGR command area.
Sangam Vihar MLA Dinesh Mohaniya, also the vice-chairman of DJB, said the modelling project would be similar to Malviya Nagar water improvement scheme but would not be outsourced. “End-to-end mapping and studying of the pipe network will be carried out to find leaks, capacity, flow problems, etc. Additionally, Malviya Nagar area has a large portion which gets water from the Deer Park and GK ends. The separation of these areas will bring the areas closer to the supplying UGR. The final supply point will not be on the tail-end, leading to improvement of water supply pressure too,” Mohaniya said.
The areas that would benefit are Arjun Nagar, Safdarjung, Krishna Nagar, Gulmohar Park, Niti Bagh, Masjid Moth, Yusuf Marg, Hauz Khas, Green Park, Padmini Enclave and Mayfair Garden.
At present, the area between Aurobindo Marg and August Kranti Marg gets water from two sources—80% from Deer Park UGR and the rest from GK UGR. Often, people here complain of low water pressure.
A senior DJB official overseeing the project said, “Hydraulic modelling will point out if pipes of lesser capacity vis-à-vis the consumer population are still in use. The exercise was also carried out in Malviya Nagar. Manila had adopted a similar end-to-end ‘Walk-the-Line’ campaign in 1997 after facing water issues for decades. It had corporatised its Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System. The private company that took over proposed the campaign whereby officials involved locals in creating a database for leaks and fixed them. The campaign was successful and it brought down Manila’s water loss from 63% in 1997 to 14.2% in 2010.”
Two years ago, DJB had hired consultants for visual reconnaissance of the command areas of the three UGR’s.
