BENGALURU: A 75-year-old beggar was found dead on Tuesday morning in front of his usual post, the cantonment railway station. What intrigued police was the stash they found in Shareef Sab’s artificial leg – Rs 96,760 in alms that he had saved up.
Shareef Sab, from Hyderabad, had been begging at the station for several years. Around 10am on Tuesday, passersby found his body at the same spot and informed railway police who alerted the High Grounds police.
When police came to remove the body, they found the artificial leg to be very heavy. They removed it and found it full of notes and coins. There were 42 notes of Rs 500, 470 notes of Rs 100, 20 Rs 200 notes, 215 Rs 50 notes, 430 Rs 20 notes, 528 Rs 10 notes. Police said they were able to trace Shareef’s sister in Hyderabad and have informed her. They have registered a case of unnatural death.
Locals told police that Shareef had his leg amputated owing to gangrene and got the artificial limb many years ago. Police said Shareef ate at hotels in the area and slept near the railway station.
