HISAR: Facing losses on account of damage to his paddy crop due to waterlogging last season, a farmer from Bandaheri Mundhal village in Hisar district ended his life on Tuesday. Dharam Singh (48) owed about Rs 5.5 lakh to a bank and other villagers.
On October 4, a debt-ridden farmer of Pabra village in Hisar district, Ram Kumar (52), commited suicide. Kisan Sabha, however, said this was the fifth such case in the district.
Dharam’s family member Dharmender, a government teacher posted at Harikot village of Hisar, said the farmer owned 3.5 acres and had taken another 2.5 acres on lease. “He had grown paddy on six acres. After unseasonal heavy rain and waterlogging for many months, his crop was totally damaged. Since then, he was upset,” he said. “Now, he had sown wheat in his field. During this time, he took a loan of Rs 2.5 lakh from Kisan Credit Card of UCO Bank for crop management. He borrowed nearly Rs 3 lakh from other people in the village,” he added.
He said Dharam started worrying about the issue of debt and often talked about it at home. Apart from this, he was also upset for not being able to take proper car of his two sons due to the debt, he said.
Dharmender added that his eldest son, Amarjeet, was studing at Jat College in Hisar and the younger one was studying in Class XII at a government school in the village. Dharam had gone to his farm for spraying a weed killer on Monday. When he did not return, his son and others went to the field in the evening and saw Dharam lying unconscious, he added.
He was admitted to a private hospital, but he died on Tuesday morning. The kin of deceased have demanded debt waiver from the state government.
ASI Rawat Singh, investigation officer in the case, said the kin of deceased had claimed that Dharan was upset because he was under debt and his crop had been damaged.
Akhil Bharatiya Kisan Sabha state general secretary Phul Singh Shyokand claimed that four farmers had committed suicide in the district till October due to debt. He demanded a government job, debt waiver and Rs 20 lakh as compensation for the kin of deceased. He also demanded debt waiver for other farmers.
