Three injured; organisers booked

A jallikattu organised without permission from the authorities was stopped midway at Malathankulam, near Ariyalur, on Tuesday.

This was the first jallikattu to be held in the region this year. Normally, it is organised during the Pongal festival season in the State.

Although the district administration had refused permission for the venue, the organisers went ahead with bulls brought from Tiruchi, Ariyalur, Perambalur and Pudukottai districts. A large number of spectators arrived to witness the event. At least three persons sustained injuries during the event. Of them K. Ashok (35) of Kaduvettankurichi, a bull tamer, suffered grievous injury as a bull gored his neck. After first aid, he was rushed to the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital, police sources said.

On receipt of information about the event, police and revenue officials, who came to the spot, directed the organisers to stop releasing the bulls into the arena. After releasing about 250 bulls, the organisers announced that the event had come to an end. The Keezhapazhur police registered a case against Benjamin, leader of the jallikattu festival committee, and four others for organising the event without permission.
