Rajkot: In yet another incident, a farmer ended his life by consuming pesticide in Chuda village of Limbdi taluka in Surendranagar district on Wednesday morning.
Police said the farmer, identified as Ghanshyam Mithapara (50), took the drastic step after his wheat and cotton crop failed.
“My uncle had been suffering from depression ever since his wheat and cotton crop that he had cultivated failed. First his cotton crop failed and then cattle grazed on his wheat crop, ruining it completely. This filled him with anguish and drove him to end life,” said Himmat, Mithapara’s nephew in his statement to the police.
However, the police after investigation claimed that Mithapara had been depressed ever since his wife Vasant died of brain disease six months ago and his daughter developed elephantine leg.
“To compound his woes, Mithapara’s daughter was suffering from elephantiasis, due to which he was worrying about finding a suitable match for her. This disturbed him so much that he decided to end his life,” said R J Gohel, sub-inspector of Chuda police station.
Including Mithapara, 20 farmers have committed suicide across Saurashtra since September 2018 due to crop failure caused by deficient rainfall.
Eight suicides were reported from Amreli district, three from Surendranagar district, two suicides each from Porbandar, Devboomi Dwarka, Rajkot and Junagadh districts and two suicides were reported from Jamnagar district.
