Varanasi: Boatmen’s strike hits New Year festivity
TNN | Jan 2, 2019, 12:38 ISTVARANASI: The ongoing strike of boatmen entered the fifth day, affecting the New Year celebrations at banks of the Ganga on Tuesday.
The boatmen are protesting against the cruise operators collecting passengers from multiple points like Assi Ghat.
While the ghats along river Ganga as well as jetties remained flooded with revellers, the river stream as well as the sand bed on opposite bank wore a deserted look.
Due to unavailability of boats in the Ganga other sites including Sarnath, public parks and multiplexes remained overcrowded.
Several rounds of talks with district magistrate Surendra Singh and officials failed to convince the boatmen to call off their strike. They blocked the waterway in river Ganga to disrupt the movement of cruise boat on Monday evening.
The leaders of boatmen Pramod Majhi and Shambhu Sahani said that the strike will continue till they get a written assurance by the district administration to stop cruise operators from collecting passengers from multiple points.
