Mysuru: Shocked to find toilets in Rajendranagar having been turned into temporary dwellings, Mysuru mayor Pushpalatha Jagannnath on Wednesday directed Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) commissioner KH Jagadeesh to evict those staying in lavatories, and asked him to find alternative places for the people to dwell in.

Pushpalatha’s visit to Rajendranagar was prompted by a request made by the ward corporator Pradeep Chandra, who was keen to bring the poor condition of the underground drains in his ward to the mayor’s attention. During a tour of the ward, she chanced upon abjectly poor people, most of whom were ragpickers and scavengers, staying in toilets. On learning that they were forced to stay in lavatories owing to lack of alternative lodgings, she directed Jagadeesh to find them another place to stay.

The mayor was also not pleased on finding sheds erected on government land illegally. Dubbing those involved in the encroachment of government land ‘mafia’, Pushpalatha said, “When I asked them why they were staying illegally in sheds on government land, they informed me that they would vacate them only if they could be guaranteed houses. But, under the JNnurm scheme, the government had built and allotted houses to slum dwellers in 2007. But, a group of people keen on creating trouble have set up these sheds. I have directed the MCC commissioner to clear these sheds in a week.”

On the other hand, residents of Rajendranagar asked Pusphalatha to construct a community hall near the public toilets, built by the Karnataka Slum Development Board. “The public toilets have remained locked since the day they were completed. This is why the residents want a Samudaya Bhavan built in the area. I will talk to the board and discuss the possibility of building a community centre for the residents, most of whom belong to the underprivileged sections of society,” said Pushpalatha.

Besides inspecting the condition of the drains, Pushpalatha paid a visit to the Kuri mandi slaughterhouse in the locality to verify if the owners adhered to the standards of cleanliness prescribed by the government. “We will take up initiatives to improve sanitation in the ward,” she assured the citizens.
