CHENNAI: A 25-year-old woman research scholar, pursuing Ph.D in IIT-Madras, committed suicide by hanging inside her hostel room. This is the second suicide in IIT in the last four months.
Police identified the deceased as Ranjana Kumari of Jharkhand. The scholar, who joined the institute in 2017, was pursuing doctorate in the metallurgy and material sciences department.
According to sources, Ranjana Kumari did not step out of her room for the last two days. After attempts to reach her on phone failed, Kumari's parents informed her hostel mates who found her dead in the room.
A final-year ocean engineering student from Kerala had committed suicide at the institute hostel room in September last year.
