Number lesser than last year; police give credit to various awareness campaigns rolled out in the city

Over 500 people were booked for drunk driving on New Year’s Eve, the police said on Tuesday.

The number has decreased from 765 in 2017.

The police said 509 people were penalised for drunk driving out of which 362 were drivers of the vehicle and the rest were owners.

In 2017, a total of 765 people were booked for the crime out of which 543 were drivers and 222 were owners.

The decline in numbers is perhaps because of the various awareness campaigns that were rolled out before the New Year’s Eve, the police said.

“Posters showing accidents due to drunk driving were put up. Messages on the radio asked people to go with drivers instead of driving themselves after getting drunk,” said a police officer.

15,000 personnel

They also had a no-tolerance policy toward drunk driving and about 15,000 personnel were deployed to ensure law and order.

Elaborate traffic arrangements were also made across the Capital to ensure smooth movement.
