Centre okays proposal to allot land to Chandigarh Housing Board

CHANDIGARH: In a major relief to the UT employees, the Union cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposal to allot land to Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) for construction of apartments for 3930 allottees under the Self-Financing Housing Scheme—2008.
The Union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the proposal. Recently, Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher had raised the issue before the Centre regarding employees' housing scheme, which was pending since 2008.
Recently, the Centre had submitted before the Punjab and Haryana high court that the proposal to allot 61.5 acres of government land to CHB for the purpose had been sent to the cabinet secretariat for placing before the cabinet at an early date for its decision.
The Chandigarh administration approved 'Self-financing Housing Scheme — 2008' for its employees. Accordingly, total land area of 73.3 acre was earmarked for construction of 3930 Dwelling Units for the UT employees out of which 11.8 acre was already in possession of CHB. In the instant proposal, 61.5 acre of government land was to be allotted to the housing board.
The housing body was appointed as the nodal agency for implementation of the scheme. Accordingly, the board advertised 'Self-Financing Housing Scheme' on lease hold basis for 99 years for employees in 2008.
