GURUGRAM: The city’s sports department is all set to open a facilitation centre in the Nehru Stadium this month to help athletes train indoors.
Built at a cost of Rs 2 crore, the two-storeyed building has a hall in the ground floor — where athletes can train — and five rooms in the first floor where rooms have been made where the athletes can stay.
District Sports Officer (DSO) Raj Yadav said, “A two-storey building has been made for indoor games. Right now, we have asked gymnastic players to use the facilities, later athletes from the fields of wrestling, judo and table-tennis will also be able to use the facilities.”
Sandeep Kumar, district gymnastics coach said, “This initiative by the sports department will bring positive change and encourage athletes to do better. Earlier, we found it hard to store our equipment. Most of our mats are not in good condition because they were lying in the open. Now, with this centre we’ll have a place to properly store our mats.” The coach went on to say that this hall will be beneficial to players during monsoon season, as during that time they had to cancel practice.
Sunil Khatri, district wushu coach said, “Teaching a martial style game outdoors was difficult. Now with this centre, we will be able to practice indoors.”
There is a government-run sports hostel in Nehru Stadium which has not been used since 2015 as it was lying in a dilapidated condition. Paras Ram, former district sports officer (DSO) Gurugram said, “The tiles and window panes in most of the rooms at Nehru Stadium are broken. Now, three years have passed and no funds have been allocated to repair the hostel. This is the reason the hostel is lying vacant.”
A sports department official said, “There was a need for an indoor hall as during monsoon players found it tough to practice in the open.” Besides having basic facilities, there will be a separate room for trainers, store room and locker room facilities for both boys and girls.
