LPG coverage hits 98% in Dharwad
TNN | Jan 2, 2019, 10:18 ISTHUBBALLI: Coverage of Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) connections in Dharwad district has increased to 98.45 % from 62 per cent in 2016. As many as 4, 29,121 households have LPG connection.
Since the inception of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) as many as 34,702 beneficiaries have availed LPG connections, said PMUY district nodal officer PVR Bhargav.
Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Bhargav said that of the 56,800 homes that were identified as beneficiaries under the Social Economic Caste Census (2011), the three state-owned oil companies have been successful in covering 34,702 houses under PMUY. As on December 1, 2018, nearly 98.45% of (as many as 4,29,121) households in Dharwad district has LPG connection, he added.
Since the inception of the scheme on May 1, 2016, the three oil companies- India Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation - have distributed three crore LPG cylinders to BPL card holders at the national level, he said.
To reach the underprivileged, the Union government had extended the coverage to seven new categories of beneficiaries - SC- STs household, Antodaya Anna Yojana, forest dwellers, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and others.
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi led NDA government has decided to release deposit free LPG connections to poor families. The government has also given loans to 96.1% (1.34 lakh) of the beneficiaries to purchase gas stove and for the first refill of gas, he said.
Bhargav added that 87.3% of PMUY beneficiaries in the district are coming back for refills and the average per capita consumption of cylinder is 3.4 refills which is less than the national average. For the benefit of poor, oil companies have also introduced 5kg refills, which they can swap with a 14.2 kg cylinder.
Oil companies are improving their distribution supply in rural areas. From 40 distributors two years ago, the district will soon have 53 distributors. Soon, the supply of LPG cylinders in rural areas will improve, he said.
