Ishrat Jahan case accused cop promoted

AHMEDABAD: G L Singhal, an accused in the 2004 Ishrat Jahan encounter case, was one of the six IPS officers promoted by the Gujarat government on Tuesday. Vipul Aggarwal, discharged in 2005 Sohrabuddin Shaikh encounter case, has also been promoted.
Singhal has been promoted to the rank of inspector general of police (IG) from deputy inspector general of police of the Commando Training Centre in Gandhinagar. Singhal was arrested in February 2013 in the Ishrat case. He was granted default bail by a CBI court as the agency could not file charge sheet in stipulated time of 90 days. The state government had reinstated him in May 2014 as the superintendent of police of the State Crime Records Bureau.
Satish Sharma among 6 promoted
Vipul Aggarwal, serving as additional commissioner of police (administration) in Ahmedabad city police, has been promoted at joint commissioner of police (administration).
Aggarwal was reinstated in November 2014 after being granted bail in the alleged encounter case of Sohrabuddin Shaikh, his wife, Kausar Bi, and his aide, Tulsi Prajapati. He was discharged by Bombay High Court in September 2018.
According to the notification issued by the state home department, six IPS officers have been promoted, including Surat commissioner of police Satish Sharma, who has been been promoted to the rank of director general of police. He will continue to be Surat police chief.
Surat additional commissioner of police D N Patel has been promoted as the joint commissioner of police (JCP), Surat, while M A Chawda, DIG Gandhinagar range, has been promoted as IG, Gandhinagar range.
IPS officer J R Mothaliya, additional commissioner of police (traffic), Ahmedabad, has been made the JCP. The pay scale of another 22 IPS officers has been changed, the notification said.
