Mumbai: Narrow escape for six cops as boat capsizes near Girgaum beach

MUMBAI: Six police personnel survived after the dingy boat they were sailing in capsized 300 metres away from the shore at Girgaum beach. The personnel were heading towards the parent boat when the incident occurred. The incident occurred at around 8.40pm and immediately they were taken to a Rescue Board by the rescue team.
Lifeguard posted at Point 5 near Mafatlal boat Club noticed that a row boat which was transferring the six police personnel to the Police Custom/Patrol Boat capsized in open sea. The incident occurred at a distance of about 300 metres from shore line. “All are safe and nothing serious occurred. The personnel were sailing to be transferred to the parent boat when the incident occurred,” Mumbai police spokesperson DCP Manjunath Singe said.
Duty Lifeguard Pratik Waghe immediately took a Rescue Board and reached the spot. On reaching, he noticed that all six personnel were without life jackets and holding each other at the spot. One of them was suspected to be in trouble and was seen vomiting and looked uncomfortable. In the meantime, the police Custom/Patrol boat picked up all six and brought them to the shore. Life guard supervisor Sachin Tandel & Lifeguard Bhavesh Tandel reached the location on the beach and were ready to check vitals of the victim and render First aid/CPR but the police personnel said that the victim may not need it and immediately transported him inside the Police Van with assistance of lifeguards.
Simultaneously, it was also reported that an another local fisherman also had reached the incident spot with thermocoal floating structure. Lifeguard Pratik noticed that the fisherman looked tired. He placed him over the rescue board and brought him back to the shore.
Heavy crowd of about 2000 persons were found to be seen on the beach today.
All major beach are manned by MFB flood response team and life guards.
