Rajkot: A video of three persons harassing a pride of lions by chasing them on a bike went viral on social media on Tuesday.
According to forest department sources, the video was shot in some village of Amreli district’s Lilya taluka in a revenue (non-protected) area.
Two persons on a bike with a pillion rider holding the mobile’s camera and their friend running along with the vehicle are seen chasing a pride of around five lions through a field on a dirt road near the village.
The lions are seen frantically running away into the wild even as the trio keep following them speedily.
There are around 100 lions in Amreli district alone and most of them are found in the revenue areas close to human habitation.
The video has once again exposed the forest department’s inability to curb harassment to the lions.
When contacted, conservator of forest, Rajkot, A C Patel under whose jurisdiction this area falls, told TOI: “We came to know about this video on Monday evening and probe has been initiated to identify the people. We have got the RTO registration number of bike and based on this, we will track the perpetrators very soon.”
According to sources, illegal lion shows are rampant in Gir and greater Gir area. It was only after a video of some persons luring a lioness with a chicken that went viral few months ago that the forest department announced various steps to curb the such shows. Over 50 teams were formed to keep a watch on people who harass the lions in four districts where lions are found.
