10 youths arrested for attacking cops
tnn | Jan 2, 2019, 00:00 ISTAttingal: Chirayankeezhu police on Tuesday arrested 10 men for allegedly assaulting SI Niyas during New Year celebrations. Two officers attached to Kerala Armed Police camp too sustained injuries in the attack.
According to the police, the inicdent happened at 1.15 am on Tuesday at Azhoor under Chirayinkeezh police station limits. The accused attacked Niyas and a team of four civil police officers accompanying when they reached Azhoor and asked them to stop their celebrations, which had turned into a nuisance to residents.
All accused are residents of Aaradipatha near Azhoor. The SI and team reached the spot after receiving a complaint that the youths were playing music on loudspeakers even during the late hours, violating the deadline stipulated by the police .
There were around 35 men in the group and all of them appeared to be in an inebriated condition. When asked to turn off the loudspeaker they refused. When the police insisted, the gang resorted to violence. The cops’ attempt to resist infuriated them further and they assaulted the officers with iron rods and sticks. They also vandalised the police jeep, causing serious damages.
When more forces arrived, the gang dispersed and ran helter skelter. Six of them broke into a locked house and hid inside. When the police entered inside, the accused tried to attack them using machetes and knives. However, the cops managed to overpower them. The accused were apprehended after summoning more policemen to the spot. Their arrests were recorded by Tuesday morning.
The accused persons were charged with sections 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from duty), 353 (assault on public servants to deter them from discharging duty) and section 308 of IPC (attempt to commit culpable homicide) of IPC along with relevant sections of Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act for causing damages to the police jeep.
The police sources said that several accused were habitual offenders . Those who are still at large include a murder accused too.
Otherwise, the New Year celebrations in the district were peaceful without any major untoward incidents
