Narcotic cops feel that the use of ganja has gone up in Tamil Nadu, pointing out that government agencies have seized nearly 4,000 kg of ganja and destroyed large areas under cultivation in 2018.
Chennai:
Seizure by NCB went up from 327 kg in 2017 to 2,345 kg in 2018. NCB had registered only 3 cases in 2017 while the number of ganja seizure cases was 13 in 2018.
In the joint operation by NCB, Andhra Pradesh Police Department and Excise Department, 7-acre cultivation in Kunjankutt village, Paderu Mandal in Visakhapatnam and 47 acres in Munichingputtu Mandal, Visakhapatnam, were destroyed on December 23 and 27 respectively. Narcotics smugglers from TN usually procure ganja from the AP-Odisha border.
Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) alone had seized 2,345 kg of ganja during the year. The rest of the seizures were by Narcotics Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and Railway Protection Force (RPF).
“Because of high demand, more ganja is being cultivated. We were able to seize a large quantity because there is the supply is huge. So, we have to assume that the demand for ganja has gone up in Tamil Nadu in the year 2018,” noted A Bruno, director, South Zone, NCB.
