SRINAGAR: Governor Satya Pal Malik dismissed allegations former CM Mehbooba Mufti made against J&K police of harassing relatives of militants saying that Mufti was speaking language with upcoming elections in mind.

Former CM Mehbooba on Sunday had asked governor S P Malik to rein in the police force and accused policemen of allegedly beating up a militant’s sister, her husband and brother at police stations in Jammu recently.

The governor in a statement on Monday said, “It is clarified there are standing general and specific instructions issued to all police officers and staff for not harassing families of militants. It is followed meticulously in most circumstances. However, there could be a situation where… relatives of a militant are questioned by police under due process of law… (for) details of a militant’s whereabouts. This is done rarely and only basis specific information.”

In an aside in Jammu to reporters, Malik said, “I do not mind what Mehbooba has said as she is my friend’s daughter, but one thing is clear that speaking for militants’ is out of compulsion in view of upcoming assembly elections.”

Speaking specifically on the case Mufti referred to, Mufti’s statement said, “I’ll also direct IG Police, Kashmir, to look into this incident to see whether the lady has been harassed or her clothes torn as is being alleged. If necessary, action will be taken against any police staff found acting wrongly,” the governor said.
