PUNE: After successfully implementing watershed management and starting people’s movement to make Maharashtra drought-free, Aamir Khan’s Paani Foundation has come up with a new initiative for the year 2019.

The foundation has designed a curriculum to create awareness among youngsters about nature. A  five-hour curriculum will be introduced in ten taluka schools which will develop interest among the students to take care of nature.

Speaking to Sakal Times, Dr Avinash Pol, Advisory Committee member of Paani Foundation said, “Paani Foundation is working in watershed management programme to make Maharashtra drought-free. For motivation to villagers, we have started Satyamev Jayate Water Cup competition, which we conduct every year. This year, there are 75 talukas taking part in the competition. Now, we have taken one step ahead to connect the young generation to the foundation. So we have designed five-hour course, which will teach importance of  nature and connect the young generation with nature.”

“We have developed this curriculum to create awareness among youngsters. It will reach secondary school students. We have selected ten schools (private as well as government) from each of the 75 talukas. Our programme will start next week. We have trained 200 volunteers, who will teach the students. It is a five-day programme which will include practicals, plays, activities, competition, short films and videos. The programme will create awareness among students. It will nurture the importance of nature in the young generation,” he added.

“After reviewing the success of the course, we will decide to implement it across the State,” he said.

Paani Foundation was set up with the aim of making Maharashtra drought-free using the power of communication. The team of Satyamev Jayate researched the issue of water and found that man, not nature is largely responsible for this crisis of drought. While decentralised watershed management has proved to be the scientific solution to this problem, the greater problem to address is that of social fracture.
