Volkswagen XL1: Buy This Futuristic Hybrid, Turn Heads Wherever You Go

Volkswagen may be readying its offensive in electrified cars, but five years ago it was selling the much more impressive-looking XL1 hybrid.

The XL1 was a limited run of only 250 units worldwide, and was powered by a diesel-plug-in hybrid powertrain matched to a seven-speed DSG transmission.

The powertrain combined a 0.8-liter two-cylinder oil burner, making 48 PS (47 hp / 35 kW), and a 27 PS (27 hp / 20 kW) electric motor, for a total output of 75 PS (74 hp / 55 kW), and an average fuel consumption of just 0.9 lt/100 km (314 mpg UK / 261 mpg US). With the battery fully charged, the XL1 has a zero-emission range of up to 50 km (31 miles).

As it happens, one will be up for grabs by SilverstoneAuctions in their event that takes place on January 12, at the NEC, Birmingham, UK.

With one owner since new, this Volkswagen XL1 has barely been driven, showing only 312 miles (502 km) on the clock, and is in perfect condition overall, according to the auction house.

Finished in Clearwater Blue Metallic over a black Alcantara interior with ceramic black finishes, this XL1 is expected to fetch between £85,000 and £100,000 ($107,495/€94,258-$126,465/€110,891) – or about as much as a new BMW M5 in the United Kingdom.
