Hundreds of passengers are facing delays at Sydney Airport after low-lying fog blanketed parts of the city. 

Passengers complained of facing massive queues and over a one hour and a half wait at the Virgin Australia check-in desk in the early hours on Wednesday. 

The queues of passengers stretched to the footpaths outside terminal two, leaving passengers lining up for as long as 45 minutes.

Delayed flights to Brisbane include VA925 and VA931, while the VA965 has been cancelled. 

The VA479 to the Sunshine Coast has been delayed. Flights VA824 and VA830 to Melbourne were also delayed.  

Passengers travelling to Perth will also experience delays on the V555 flight.  

Virgin Australia made several announcements to customers waiting at the domestic terminal and said the delays were due it being the busiest day of the year with 'over 10,000 passengers'.  

One announcement made by airport officials asked disgruntled travelers not to 'berate our staff while we work through this difficult time'.  

One passenger, who had been up since 4am, had her flight cancelled in the early hours. 

The woman was offered an alternative flight, which wasn't scheduled until 2pm.

'I didn't exactly plan on spending most of my day at the airport,' she tweeted.   

A number of early morning travellers boarding the VA830 to Melbourne (Tullamarine) have been delayed for over an hour due to 'technical reasons'. 

A Sydney Airport spokesman said the fog had only caused a number of delays of roughly half an hour for flights departing between 7am and 7.30am.

Another passenger said the queues had begun extending down the road of the airport. 

'We are experiencing longer than normal queues due to weather,' Virgin Australia tweeted. 

'We are working to have guests on their way as soon as possible.'  

Passengers were placed in queues based on the departure time of their flight. 

Several people managed to board on the 7.15am flight from Sydney to Perth.
