Mumbai: Fall in fuel prices has failed to push up auto sales in the country in December as major players on Tuesday reported either marginal increase or decline in offtake during the month, citing adverse macro-economic conditions.
Maruti Suzuki India (MSI), Hyundai Motor India (HMIL), Honda Cars India (HCIL) and Tata Motors posted single digit growth during December while Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) reported decline in sales. The country’s largest carmaker MSI reported a 1.8 per cent increase in domestic sales at 1,21,479 units last month as against 1,19,286 units in the year-ago period.

Sales of the company’s mini cars comprising Alto and WagonR were at 27,661 units as compared to 32,146 units in December 2017, down 14 per cent. Similarly, sales of compact segment models such as Swift, Celerio, Ignis, Baleno and Dzire, were also down 3.8 per cent at 51,334 units as against 53,336 units in year-ago period.

Rival HMIL reported 4.6 per cent increase in domestic sales at 42,093 units in December 2018 as compared with 40,158 units in the year-ago period. Honda Cars also posted 4 per cent increase in domestic sales at 13,139 units in December 2018. It had sold 12,642 units in the domestic market in the year-ago month. Tata Motors reported a 1 per cent increase in domestic passenger vehicle sales at 14,260 units last month as compared to 14,180 units in December 2017.

On the other hand M&M saw passenger vehicle sales decline 3 per cent during the month at 15,091 units as against 15,543 units in the year-ago period. M&M President, Automotive Sector Rajan Wadhera, said in the “domestic market, challenges relating to tight liquidity and low buying sentiment continue the de-growth for December”.

“We hope to see good performance in March quarter, owing to the anticipated rural demand because of the harvesting season and the launch of our new XUV300 in February 2019,” he added. In the two-wheeler segment, niche bike maker Royal Enfield saw its domestic sales decline 14 per cent to 56,026 units last month as compared with 65,367 units in December 2017.
