A grandfather was forced to spend his New Year's Eve in hospital with nasty injuries, after he was bashed by a gang of youths. 

Tom Whitelaw was having a beer at his neighbour's house in Busselton when he noticed the youths smashing glass at around 10pm on Monday evening and decided to step in. 

When he asked the group to stop, Whitelaw, 59, was brutally attacked and left covered in blood after one of the youths picked up a scooter and smashed it into his head, 7 News reported.

'They just told me where to go and before I knew it, I was just basically on the ground,' Mr Whitelaw recalled. 

'He picked up a scooter and drilled me with it.' 

Neighbours rushed to the aide of the roof tiler and managed to pin down one suspect until police arrived on the scene.  

Mr Whitelaw was left covered in blood, suffering a suspected fractured cheekbone, along with various cuts and bruises. 

He was taken to hospital where he was given 10 stitches.

Mr Whitelaw was also concerned his knee was injured during the attack, meaning he may be forced to take time off work.

The teenager was reportedly released without charge and is assisting police with their inquiries.  

Ten to 12 youths were allegedly involved in the incident.
