BJD seeks changes in Triple Talaq Bill
Minati Singha | TNN | Updated: Jan 1, 2019, 09:47 ISTBHUBANESWAR: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) will support the Triple Talaq Bill provided some amendments are made to it, said the regional party on Monday.
Odisha’s ruling party wants the bill to be passed without any delay and to avoid that, the Centre should hold talks with the opposition parties, BJD’s leader in Rajya Sabha Prasanna Acharya said on Monday.
“We want the bill to be passed in the Rajya Sabha, but with some changes, which we had suggested. Since the opposition parties are protesting against the bill, the Centre should have discussed it in detail and tried to resolve the issues arising from it,” he added.
He said, “The BJD had opposed the criminalisation clause in the bill and sought an amendment to it through the withdrawal of the jail-term. A penalty on the offender can be imposed instead.”
They are also opposed to anyone having the authority to lodge a complaint on behalf of the victim’s wife. “The Bill should have a provision for a written consent of the victim’s wife for one to lodge a complaint, else chances of its misuse by falsely implicating innocent men would be high,” he added.
Acharya further said the BJD is yet to decide whether they will support the bill in the Upper House.
There are nine BJD members in the Rajya Sabha.
