Palakkad division pushes for green tracks
Jaideep Shenoy | TNN | Jan 1, 2019, 11:34 ISTMANGALURU: Even as the ministry of railways is pushing for vacuum bio-toilets in all coaches, Palakkad division of Southern Railway (SR) has retrofitted all 552 coaches owned by it with bio-toilets.
Bio-toilets are aimed at eliminating discharge of human waste along railway tracks and also ensuring that railway stations, not just in the division, but across the zonal railway are clean, said Pratap Singh Shami, divisional railway manager
Incidentally, the ministry had asked all zones and divisions to retrofit bio-toilets on all coaches by December 31 in the project where excreta are collected in tanks fitted beneath the lavatories. This is converted into methane and water with the help of bacteria, avoiding spillage waste in the open and along tracks. Southern Railway has fitted bio-toilets on 5,443 out of its 6,603 coaches and ministry plans to fit bio-toilets on 80,000 coaches across zones.
Sections of Southern Railway – Rameshwaram-Manamadurai, Tiruchirapalli-Manamadurai, Shoranur-Nilambur, and so on have been acknowledged as green train corridors with trains plying on these sections fitted with bio-toilets and having zero discharge on tracks. SR has outsourced sanitisation contracts, including cleaning of approach roads, circulating areas and station premises through mechanised cleaning at frequent intervals, Shami said.
Giving greater thrust to overall hygiene and cleanliness on their premises, the division and SR in addition to bio-toilets, is working towards providing On Board Housekeeping Service (OBHS). OBHS has been provided on board as many as 102 trains of the zonal railway to ensure cleanliness and hygiene of coaches in running trains. This will be supplemented by coach mitra that has been introduced in all the 102 trains covered under OBHS.
Coach Mitras take care of complaints on linen, water availability, small repairs, pest control/ disinfectants, besides coach cleaning requirements, Shami said, adding passengers need to text their complaints to coach mitra dedicated helpline number 9821736069 citing their PNR number. Incidentally, as many as 10 trains in the division are provided with OBHS, Shami said, adding the facility will be extended to more trains in the near future.
