An elderly man has died after his van veered off the road on Queensland's Darling Downs and hit a tree.

The driver and sole occupant, aged in his 80s, was on Pechey-Maclagan Road near an intersection with the New England Highway south of Crows Nest when his van left the road and hit a tree on Tuesday morning.

The Jondaryan man died at the scene and investigations are continuing.
