The storm, that kicked off after Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said last week that revenue is the most corrupt department in the state, may have blown over, but the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) statistics show that revenue is not the most corrupt or even the second most corrupt department.
In the last five years, the highest number of graft cases were related to the home (police) department, ACB data shows. In fact, police topped the cases in each of the five years since 2014.
ACB data shows that 1,309 cases were reported in all with ACB between 2014 and 2018, of which the home department accounted for 341 or nearly 26% of the cases. It was followed by panchayat department, which had 221 cases or around 17% of the total cases. Revenue department accounted for 159 cases in the five-year period.
Home department was the ‘top’ performer even in terms of accused booked by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB). The data shows that 515 police personnel were booked by ACB between 2014 and 2018 of the total 2,197.
Similarly, the number of accused was 303 in the case of panchayat related graft cases, and 236 for revenue department. Last Wednesday, Rupani said, “The revenue department is infamous for being the most corrupt department in the state.”
