DUMKA: The police administration on Monday said they will leave no stone unturned to thwart any attempts of miscreants to spoil the New Year celebrations as revellers from bordering states of Bihar and Bengal are all set to throng important picnic spots in large numbers across the district.
Security around the Massanjor dam which is situated 25km from the district headquarters is on the top priority as it is the most sought after picnic destinations here. Tourists have already started thronging Massanjor dam, which witnesses tourist footfalls round the year.
Dumka superintendent of police Y S Ramesh said, “Forces are being deployed adequately at Masanjor dam keeping in view of surge in crowd on January 1 across Bengal and Bihar besides local visitors. Suitable arrangements were also being taken at other picnic/tourist spots in the district.”
Surrounded by lush green hills from three sides, Masanjor dam along Dumka-Suri (Birbhum, West Bengal) is quite scenic with vast extension of blue water of Mayurakshi river adding to its natural beauty. Notably, the dam had been in limelight recently as both the Jharkhand and Bengal governments were at loggerheads with each other on the issue of administrative stakes on it.
Other tourist sites here include Tatloi, famous for hot springs, Shristi hills and Hizla hills along the banks of Mayurakshi river too attracts sizeable number of picnickers.
Besides crowd control, police have also drawn up plans to tackle with issues of alcohol consumption and drunken driving.
“All the police stations have been directed to be extra vigilant to undo illegal stocking and unauthorised selling of liquor. This apart, extensive checks are being held to curb drunken driving,” Ramesh said.
