Awkward moment Channel 10's New Year's Eve countdown goes VERY wrong - but is all as it seems?

  • Channel 10's The Loop aired a wrong and awkward New Year's Eve countdown
  • Liv Phyland and Scott Tweedie began countdown with 10 seconds to New Year
  • During the countdown the numbers were jumbled up and confused the pair
  • As the clock struck midnight the screen splashed a huge 2018 rather than 2019
  • This is not the first time the pair suffered an embarrassing blunder on live TV

An Australian television show has aired one of the most awkward New Year's Eve countdowns in history.

Channel 10's The Loop presenters Liv Phyland and Scott Tweedie began their countdown to 2019 on Monday at 10 seconds to midnight.

But what happened next left them confused.

The countdown, which was shown on a big screen, suffered a technical malfunction which caused the numbers to appear in the wrong order.

The malfunction went from 10, 9, 8, 9, 8, 9, 8, 7, 6, 8, 9, 6, 5 before splashing a huge 2018.

An overly excited Liv appeared confused during the countdown and did not fix up the number order, as she read what appeared on screen.

Tweedie, who appears to be reading the numbers off the teleprompter, also misfired with his countdown.

Tweedie then looked down at his watch and they yelled out 'happy New Year'.

A phone on screen then rang and Tweedie could be heard saying, 'it's 2019' before the screen was immediately fixed up to show 2019.

The Loop shared their cringeworthy segment on their Facebook page.

'If you didn't quite get things right in 2018, today is the day to hit refresh and try again... and that includes our graphics department,' the video was captioned.

'Sydney fire works display made the same mistake,' someone commented, referring to the mistake which also showed 2018 on the Sydney Harbour Bridge rather than 2019.

'Sorry, there may have been a glitch there... Maybe I was stuck in The Loop,' another commented.

'The first thing I did this year was complain about the rubbish New Year's countdown on The Loop,' one tweeted.

While the show blamed the incident on a technical error, many viewers speculated that the countdown was staged.

'I don't know if this was supposed to be a joke like last year but I wasn't into it,' someone wrote, referring to another embarrassing blunder the pair suffered back on New Year's Eve in 2016.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Network 10 for comment.
