MUMBAI: A former informer with Hyderabad customs and his accomplice from Mumbai were arrested on Monday for possessing 20.4kg ephedrine worth Rs3.04 crores. The two-Mohammed Hussain (45) and Dayanand Muddanar (32)-reached Mumbai by road to sell the drug to lounges and pubs for New Year Eve celebrations. The police said the plan was to mix the drug with ice cream or juice or water (to make ice cubes) so that it could be sold to customers closely known to the managements of the pubs and lounges in question.
Police are collecting information on the establishments the drug was supposed to reach. Monday's action was based on a piece of information received by additional commissioner of police (west) Manoj Sharma, who supervised DCP Paramjit Dahiya in forming a team led by inspector Daya Nayak to lay a trap near Agarwal Industrial Estate in Jogeshwari (West), where the arrests were made. "The two are peddlers," said Sharma.
Hussain had been arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in 2013 with drugs. "He was in jail for two years. After release, he resumed drug peddling," said inspector Nayak.
