PATNA: New Year’s Eve celebrations in the state capital were marked by DJ nights and Bollywood-themed parties organized at different hotels and restaurants. Sparkling fireworks adorned the skies as the clock struck 12, marking a new beginning.
An executive at a posh hotel near Gandhi Maidan claimed, “Guests had a gala time during the New Year party. They ate lip-smacking dishes and drank mocktails which were part of our unlimited buffet. They also danced on popular Bollywood numbers.”
Meanwhile, the district administration has geared up to ensure foolproof security across the city on New Year’s Day. Several measures have been taken to create a conducive environment for revellers, who will come out of their houses on January 1.
Since Patna zoo, one of the favourite picnic spots among Patnaites, has been shut due to bird flu outbreak, people are likely to visit Eco Park, Hardinge Park, Energy Park and Gandhi Maidan, among other places.
In a meeting held on Friday, district magistrate (DM) Kumar Ravi had instructed traffic police to divert vehicular movement on Strand road on January 1, keeping in mind the large number of people who will visit Eco Park because of the zoo’s closure.
According to sources, no vehicles have to be parked in front of Eco Park to avoid traffic congestion. Security arrangements have been enhanced and three metal detectors installed at all the three entry points of the park.
Divisional forest officer (parks) Hemant Patil said, “Around 60 armed policemen along with few women cops will keep an eye on the visitors. As many as 10 additional ticket counters will be made functional on January 1 so that people do not have to stand in long queues.”
The additional collector (disaster management) has been directed by the DM to employ divers, lifeguards and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams at Eco Park to avoid any untoward incident.
Besides, ambulances with doctors and nurses will also be deployed at prominent locations in the city. DIG Manu Maharaaj told this newspaper, “Special squads will conduct surprise raids on hotels and restaurants to make sure that liquor is not being consumed. They will also use breathalyzers at different locations.”
Governor Lalji Tandon extended his wishes to the people of the state for a prosperous and peaceful new year.
While most people have made plans for New Year celebrations, there are some office-goers who will work on January 1. Amrit, co-founder of a city-based private firm, said “I have no special plans this time, but I wish to work harder and stay positive.”
