GREATER NOIDA: A 32-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly barging into an engineer’s house and keeping his wife and daughter hostage at gunpoint for around 20 minutes at NTPC Township in Jarcha.
Police said the accused wanted his contractual job in NTPC back, which he had lost after a fight with the engineer over a year ago.
The accused was identified as Karmveer (32), a resident of Chauna village in Jarcha, who was staying at the township with his wife and children.
Karmveer was terminated from his job as a contract lineman in August 2017 after he fought with junior engineer Rajesh Kumar Rai (50) over some matter.
Around 9.20pm on Monday, Karmveer entered Rajesh’s quarters in the township armed with a country-made pistol and began searching for him.
As Rajesh was away at a party, Karmveer held his wife Sandhya and their 22-year-old daughter hostage at gunpoint. He made a phone call to Rajesh and asked him to immediately return home or else his wife and daughter would be killed.
Rajesh said he was attending a party thrown on the occasion of a colleague’s retirement when he received the call.
“I was shocked and terrified. He threatened me saying he would kill my wife and daughter because he was angry with me. I begged him to calm down and asked my colleagues to help while I rushed home,” said Rai.
Rajesh arrived home and tried to persuade Karmveer to put down the gun, but to no avail. Meanwhile, police were informed and a team reached the house soon. “When we arrived and I peeped in from the window, the accused had pointed the gun at Rajesh’s daughter. I signalled at her to duck. I entered the house swiftly and lunged at Karmveer, snatching the weapon from him,” said Prabhat Dixit, SHO of Jarcha police station. Karmveer was then detained and later arrested.
Dixit said Karmveer had been allotted quarters in the township because his father also worked at NTPC.
“On questioning, the accused revealed that he had a grudge against Rajesh ever since he lost his job in August 2017. He intended to threaten Rajesh at gunpoint into helping him get the job back,” the SHO added.
On the basis of a complaint filed by Rajesh, the accused was booked under sections 452 (house trespass after preparation for hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), 307 (attempt to murder) and 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement) of the IPC, alone with section 7 (molesting a person to prejudice of employment) of the Criminal Law Amendment Act at Jarcha police station.
He was produced in a local court on Tuesday, which sent him to judicial custody.
