RANCHI: The city police on Sunday began deployment of forces at crucial tourist spots as well as other hangout zones in and around the state capital to ensure hassle-free and safe celebrations while ringing in the New Year .
Senior SP (Ranchi) Anish Gupta, while talking to TOI, said five quick response teams (QRT) have been set up fo rthe city and will rush to incident sites in case of emergency.
“QRT personnel are being deployed at strategic locations in the city. This is in addition to the police personnel detailed at specific locations,” he said.
Additional forces have also been mobilised to keep extra vigils at tourist spots located in sensitive areas, Gupta said.
During the New Year bash and December 31 revelries, many waterfalls and dams located on the city outskirts receive maximum footfall and most of them fall in sensitive areas. Some popular waterfalls include those in Jonha, Hundru, Panchghag and Dasam. The Patratu dam on Ranchi outskirts in Ramgarh is also another popular picnic site.
“We have deployed five companies of paramilitary forces in the vicinity of all these spots which fall under Naxal-affected zones and we are also conducting checks on drunk driving simultaneously through local police stations on all routes leading to these spots,” Gupta said.
To curb instances of eve-teasing, policemen in plainclothes will be deployed at all prominent locations.
Towards preventing eve-teasing, SP (city) Sujata Veenapani said, “Deployment of plainclothe policemen is in addition to the nearly 70 Shakti commandos (women constables) doing the rounds in the city. Safety of women is of prime importance.” She further said clubs and hotels have been given special directives for extra cover and better coordination.
“We have asked clubs and hotels organising New Year bash to refrain from serving illegal liquor and use of any banned substances. They have been instructed to install functional CCTV cameras at entry and exit points,” Veenapani said.
Police have also issued a set of guidelines for public as precautionary measures along with important helpline numbers in case they need any assistance.
Some of the guidelines included ban on smoking and drinking at public places, complete ban on drunk driving and curb on playing of loud music at all spots. For those visiting waterfalls, they have been advised not to venture into deep water and isolated places.
“We have also put up banners with guidelines and helpline numbers at all major spots,” Gupta added.
