VW T-Rug Reportedly Coming To Challenge Land Rover Defender

Volkswagen’s SUV lineup is vaster than ever. Depending on where you live, you can buy several high-riding vehicles, starting with the T-Cross and ending with the Touareg and Atlas.

Moreover, the German automaker is putting the final touches on its upcoming electric vehicle family, which will launch under the ID sub-brand. All of them will be underpinned by the MEB architecture, a versatile platform that will eventually give birth to other zero-emission cars from the VW Group’s other brands.

Nonetheless, despite having an armada of vehicles on their way, Volkswagen isn’t satisfied with their offerings. Thus, they could launch a Land Rover Defender rival, says AutoBild. The German publication states that if approved for production, then it will probably sit on the MEB platform mentioned above.

Unofficially called the Volkswagen T-Rug (something tells us that name won’t fly in English-speaking countries…), it’s expected to come out in two body styles, with three and five doors. The former should be some 4.5 meters (177.17 in) long, while the latter will have a length of around 4.85 meters (190.9 in). The five-door variant would thus be 125 mm (4.9 in) longer than the latest Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

In addition to the rugged exterior design, the rumored Volkswagen T-Rug is also expected to benefit from durable materials inside. As a result, owners will allegedly be able to clean the cabin with a pressure washer, although we wouldn’t bet on it.

Volkswagen will supposedly introduce the T-Rug in 2022. That is, if they give it the green light for production. However, we wouldn’t quite hold our breath for it just yet, and neither should you, not until VW officials drop the news themselves.
