NEW DELHI: A 19-year-old woman was strangled to death by her husband on suspicion of adultery in southwest Delhi’s Bamnoli village on Sunday evening. The accused, Rahul, was nabbed from the spot and handed over to the police.

Police have identified the victim as Soni Kumari and registered a case under IPC sections of murder. The couple got married in May this year following which they had frequent arguments. Rahul, a house painter in the area, had rented out a room in the village, while his parents too lived nearby, police said.

Rahul told cops that he suspected his wife of having an affair as she used to be busy talking to someone on the phone. However, when questioned, she denied the allegation, which led to frequent fights between them during which Rahul used to beat her up.

On Sunday, Rahul confronted Kumari again and started thrashing her. In a bid to save herself, she ran from her house to her in-laws, but didn’t find them there. Rahul followed her, locked the house from inside, and continued to thrash her and, in a fit of rage strangled her to death.

Meanwhile, hearing the commotion, the landlord gathered the neighbours and pinned Rahul down before contacting the police. A police team later reached the spot and took Kumari to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead.

Police are now scanning the CCTV footage of the area to ascertain the exact sequence of events. The area SDM has been intimated and a separate inquiry launched. Police are also questioning the accused’s family, as well as looking at the dowry angle.
