PATNA: The state transport department is set to launch a drive against illegal dealers selling locally assembled e-rickshaws from Monday.
According to transport secretary Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, flying squads, comprising district transport officers (DTO), motor vehicle inspectors (MVI) and enforcement sub-inspectors (ESI), will identify shops selling unauthorized e-rickshaws in their respective districts.
“Many e-rickshaws are plying on city roads without valid registration. If the flying squads find a sub-standard e-rickshaw, they will be seized immediately under the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act, 1988,” Agarwal said on Saturday, adding dealers, selling e-rickshaws without the approval of testing agencies, would be booked.
Transport department sources claimed locally assembled e-rickshaws were not fit to ply on roads. “Most e-rickshaw drivers don’t even have licence which is mandatory. They buy sub-standard vehicles at cheap rates,” Agarwal said and added the campaign would also regulate traffic movement.
E-rickshaw driver Saroj Singh said his vehicle was better than mini city buses and autorickshaws which emitted black smoke. “If the department seizes our e-rickshaws, we will be unemployed. I bought this vehicle after selling two rickshaws,” he told this reporter.
