Ambala accident: Volvo recovered, driver held by police

AMBALA: The district police on Monday arrested the accused driver, who fled the spot killing seven persons after he rammed two cars with a Volvo bus in the wee hours of Saturday, on Chandigarh-Ambala road near village Patti Rangran in Ambala. The accused driver has been identified as Vikrant Saklani, a resident of district Mandi in Himachal Pradesh.

The Volvo bus was operating on contract with the Kullu, Himachal Pradesh based Northern Travels company.


Superintendent of police Astha Modi said, “To investigate this case, three different teams were constituted and the teams with the help of the CCTV cameras extracted the passing time of the bus from the Dappar Toll Plaza. Further, the CCTV footages from the toll plazas at Gharaunda, Yamunanagar and Devi Nagar were also obtained, but the bus did not pass through these directions. Later, we started inspecting different hotels in the suspected areas and accordingly, acting on the tip-off the accused driver was arrested from near a dhaba in Shahbad of Kurukshetra.”


Ambala deputy superintendent of Police, Ajit Kumar, informed that “The driver was traveling along with the passengers from Manali to Delhi. After hitting the cars, he did not stop the bus and drove away for some distance till Baldev Nagar in Ambala city where he shifted the passengers to some other bus. Later, he drove away towards Kurukshetra and parked the bus near a dhaba on Saha road in Shahbad.”


On December 29, at around 1.30 pm, some unknown heavy vehicle had hit two hired Tavera cabs near village Patti Rangran in Ambala after passing Drive-22 Resort on Chandigarh-Ambala road. A total of 21 people were in the cars at the time of the accident which were heading towards Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh from Chandigarh. In the incident, seven persons were killed while 14 received injuries.
