40,000 cops, 5,000 CCTV cameras seek to make tonight’s party safe

MUMBAI: The police are not taking any chances in keeping Mumbai safe during New Year celebrations. Police commissioner Subodh Kumar Jaiswal has instructed at all 93 police stations in the city to carry out combing operations and surprise checks at hotels, bars garages and lodges.

“Bar owners and managers and hotels have been told to follow rules. Licences will be suspended if they violate the rules,” said DCP Manjunath Singe, also Mumbai police spokesperson. “Cops will also patrol the coastline in boats.”


While 5,000 CCTV cameras will monitor public places like the Gateway of India, over 40,000 police officials will look out for eve-teasers and criminals. Officials from the local armed police, riot control police, quick response team, crime branch, traffic police and home guards will also be deployed at Gateway of India, beaches like Girgaum, Dadar, Mahim, Juhu, Madh and Gorai, religious places and malls. “At crowded places, people will be frisked by anti-sabotage teams,” said Singe. Strict action will be taken against those caught driving drunk or rashly, said the traffic police.


Meanwhile, the north-bound carriageway of NS Road, south-bound carriageway of Chhatrapati Shivaji Road towards the Gateway, and Mount Mary Road, Kane Road, Pereira Road, St John Baptist Road in Bandra (W) will be closed for vehicles from Monday at 8pm till Tuesday 6am.
