SAMBALPUR: Land has been allotted for setting up second campus of Gangadhar Meher University (GMU) at Basantpur on the outskirts of the city. Around 47.2 acres have been allotted for the purpose, said a varsity official.

Vice-chancellor of the university Atanu Pati said, “The Central Public Works Department has been asked to prepare the master plan for the second campus. It has already started the survey for the master plan.”

He said the Rashtriya Uchachatar Shiksha Abhiyan (Rusa) has sanctioned Rs 27.5 crore for the development of infrastructure of the institution. The fund will be spent on the development of infrastructure in the existing campus of the university. The institution will get a grant of Rs 27.5 crore more in the second phase from Rusa. “The fund, which will be received in the second phase, will be utilised for the development of the second campus at Basantpur. We are planning to shift eight departments of the institution to the new campus,” he added.

The existing campus of the university is spread over 38 acres in the heart of the city. The student strength of the university is 5,600. It offers 18 undergraduate courses, 20 postgraduate courses, 19 MPhil courses and 10 PhD course besides self-financing and vocational courses.

“Several new courses will be introduced in the institution. But the existing campus does not have sufficient space,” said deputy registrar of the institution U C Pati.

The students of the institution, which was established in 1944 and upgraded to a university in 2015, have expressed happiness over the new development. “The institution is facing acute infrastructure crisis now. However, the problem will be resolved after the second campus is developed,” said Ranjan Patel, a student.
