The voting of Punjab panchayat polls completed smoothly at maximum centers at 4:00pm However, the polling has not progressed smoothly at few centres as incidents of violence have been reported from two polling stations. There have been two incidents of booth-capturing, one in Shakri village and the other in Lakhmir village. According to reports, Congress workers allegedly attacked a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate to capture a booth in Shakri village under Dera Baba Nanak assembly constituency in Gurdaspur as polling was underway.
SAD candidate Paramjit Kaur and her husband Ranjit Singh were injured in the attack. Polling in Shakri village came to a halt after the incident. Akali Dal leader Sukhjinder Langaah accused the Congress workers of capturing the booth, stamping ballot papers and forcibly removing Akali Dal workers from the polling station. In another violent incident, a ballot box was set on fire by unknown person in Lakhmir village in Mamdot area of Ferozepur. Police officials deployed at the polling stations failed to stop the attackers who forcibly entered the polling station and attacked a few vehicles parked near the booth. One dead in violence in a village in Ferozepur, ballot box set on fire.
According to reports, unidentified 12-15 men entered polling booth and set the ballot boxes on fire. Unidentified persons entered in the polling booth in a car bearing Maharashtra registration. A person also died during the violence in village Mamdot. The deceased has been identified as Mohinder Singh.Meanwhile, the police has registered a case under sections of India Penal Code (IPC ) against the unidentified persons.
